Music Therapy

This morning I woke up like most mornings – wishing it was Friday and not ready to face all the work on my desk. But, when I turned on my car, one of my favorite songs was playing on the radio – so it put the biggest smile on my face.  All of a sudden, I was in the best mood.  Not that the music got me excited about work, but it did start my morning off with some good and positive energy.

The power of music amazes me.  It has a way of changing your state of mind, which makes music a very effective stress reliever.  It’s as if the lyrics and/or the tune just put you in a different state of mind.  Many people go to music for stress relief, but there is even research on “music therapy” as having many health benefits and easing pain, tension, and sleeplessness.  Who would have thought that just listening to music could be so beneficial?!

I am not big on the latest bands and artists, but I can appreciate a good song when I hear one, and I can definitely dance to a good beat when one is playing! And, I’m sure we are all guilty of playing a song on repeat a million times, because we just can’t get enough of it.  Next time you feel a bit of stress, put on a good playlist or play a song on repeat…whatever it takes to ease your mind and put you in a better mood.  “If music is the medicine of the soul, let it play on.” (Unknown Playwright)

The Easiest Breakfast

As I’ve said before, start your morning off right. And the best way to do this is to have a satisfying and healthy breakfast. Today, I just want to share my favorite weekday breakfast.

Prepare one pack of instant (organic) oatmeal (oatmeal + boiling water); Add a banana; Add crushed walnuts; If needed, add your preferred sweetener (please try to stay away from unnatural sweeteners!)

And, voila! Breakfast is served!

Total time – maybe 2 minutes for the boiling water and that’s about it

Just as a note: Oatmeal is considered a “heart-healthy” meal, which helps control weight. It is a good source of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and it is said to lower cholesterol.

If you don’t like any of my additions to oatmeal, try your favorite fruits and nuts. My only recommendation is to stick to the original flavored oatmeal, don’t buy the ones with added flavors. Those oatmeal boxes claim to be “healthy breakfasts,” but in reality, they are packed with high, unnecessary sugars. If you like the cinnamon flavor, add your own cinnamon! Same with vanilla, apple, etc. Just make it as natural as possible.

Try it out and see what you think 🙂 Happy Eating!

Start your morning off right.

I’ve noticed that when I don’t start off with my routine, I end up on the wrong foot all throughout the day. I personally like to start my morning off with water, coffee and a healthy breakfast. It’s important to eat breakfast, as it jumpstarts your metabolism and helps give you a boost of energy and concentration in the morning.

Now I know they say to eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and a pauper at dinner – this really is the healthiest way to go…but, because I know I have dinner with my husband every night, it’s never going to be a pauper’s meal. For this reason, I try to eat moderately throughout the day so I can have a bigger dinner at night. If you do eat like a king at breakfast, just try to stay away from the high fat and high sugar foods (check your cereal box!), because these will leave you hungrier throughout the day. I tend to have a horrible sweet tooth when I start off the wrong way, and that, inevitably, leads to some grouchiness, too!

Hope you had your breakfast and have a nice day 🙂
